The Milwaukee Brewers outscored the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 in Game 3 of the World Series on Monday night. The result gives the Crew a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.
Jackson Chourio led the offensive effort with four hits in four at-bats. The 22-year-old outfielder started the game with a line drive single. He followed that with singles in his next two turns at the plate. Chourio finished the night with a double during a five-inning stretch that produced eight runs for Milwaukee.
The Brewers recorded 16 hits in the game. The Rays managed only three. Tampa Bay scored a single run in the ninth inning, but the game was already decided. The win extends Milwaukee's postseason winning streak to eight games.
Chourio became the youngest player with a four-hit game in the World Series since Joe Garagiola in 1946. That makes it the first such performance by a player under 23 in 80 years. He also stole a base during the game. The outfielder now has a .571 batting average in the series with eight hits in 14 at-bats.
"Yeah, I think that you could say this is one of my better games," Chourio said after the game. "Really, I was just taking every at-bat like it could be my last and trying to find any way I could to get on base. Because I know, as long as I get on base, there's guys behind me who could score."
Brewers manager Pat Murphy called Chourio a "total player." Murphy noted that the young star has shown discipline and work ethic similar to Kobe Bryant. "He's turning into a fine player," Murphy said. "He's coming into his own. Nobody's shocked. He's just really, really good."
The Rays have not scored since the first inning of Game 2. They entered Game 3 with a 2-1 record in the series but now face the prospect of elimination in Game 4. Milwaukee can become the first team in Major League Baseball history to go 8-0 in the final two rounds of the playoffs with a win on Tuesday.
