Anthropic Investors Eye Multi-Billion Dollar Gains Ahead of Potential IPO
Early and late-stage backers of the AI giant stand to see their portfolios surge significantly if the company lists at its projected valuation.

Anthropic is poised for a public listing later this year, with expectations that its valuation could reach as high as $2 trillion. This anticipated move would represent a significant financial milestone for the artificial intelligence laboratory, creating substantial returns for the venture capital firms and individual investors who backed the company during its formative years and subsequent growth phases.
Even before the official stock exchange debut, the financial stakes for these backers are considerable. At the company's most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, the holdings of various investors already amount to billions of dollars. According to data reviewed by Bloomberg, the current portfolio values for several key supporters highlight the dramatic appreciation of their positions since their initial capital injections.
Among the most notable positions belongs to Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google. Schmidt participated in Anthropic's Series A funding round in 2021, a time when PitchBook data indicates the startup was valued at $461 million. His early commitment has since matured into a stake comprising approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, this ownership share is estimated to be worth nearly $10 billion.
Later-stage institutional investors have also seen substantial gains. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a check for $6 billion to Anthropic last year, at which point the company was already valued at $183 billion. This significant late-round investment is currently appraised at $17 billion. If the IPO proceeds as anticipated at the higher valuation, Iconiq's position has the potential to double in value.
Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D funding round, has committed over $1 billion to the AI lab over time. This cumulative investment now represents a stake valued at $14 billion, reflecting the firm's long-term bet on Anthropic's technological trajectory and market dominance.
Sequoia, a prominent venture capital firm, entered the picture earlier this year with a $3 billion investment. At the time of this entry, Anthropic was already valued at $380 billion. The investment secured approximately 1% ownership, meaning Sequoia has already more than doubled its initial capital outlay before the company even goes public.
Sound Ventures, a firm co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, also holds a significant position. The firm initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round and has since added another $400 million to its stake. This combined investment has grown into a holding worth billions of dollars. Notably, Kutcher departed Sound Ventures earlier this year to establish a new venture capital firm, though the original fund's position remains intact.
Spark Capital, the only venture firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, made one of the largest relative gains. The firm invested $75 million during the 2023 Series C round, when Anthropic was valued at just $5 billion. That position has since expanded more than ninetyfold, reaching a current value of $7 billion. These figures illustrate the varying degrees of return associated with entering the AI market at different stages of a company's lifecycle.
