The Minnesota Timberwolves face a two-month gap in their primary scoring engine after Anthony Edwards scheduled arthroscopic surgery on his right knee for Thursday. ESPN's Shams Charania reported the procedure is necessary for recovery, with The Athletic indicating the team targets a December return. The decision comes less than 24 hours after Edwards scored 47 points in an overtime loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The franchise chose to address the injury early rather than risk further damage during the regular season. Edwards had been listed as questionable for Wednesday's matchup against the Golden State Warriors due to right knee injury maintenance before being ruled out. This is the same knee that caused issues last season, when he missed the final playoff game against the Denver Nuggets and relied on around-the-clock treatment to stay active.

Financially, the team's reliance on Edwards is substantial. He is averaging 33.3 points per game and leads the league with 18 three-pointers at a 40 percent clip. His absence forces LaMelo Ball, who joined Minnesota in a June trade from the Charlotte Hornets, to assume a larger offensive load. Ball is currently averaging 14.8 points, down from his 20-plus pace in Charlotte, largely because Edwards has controlled the offense.

Early data suggests the transition may be costly. According to Cleaning the Glass, the Wolves played at a bottom-10 offensive rating over 74 non-garbage-time possessions where Ball was on the floor and Edwards was off. While the team maintains a top-five defense, the scoring output must come from elsewhere to sustain their 3-1 start and status as a top-tier contender.

Jaden McDaniels emerges as the key asset in this restructuring. Recently signed to a one-year, $40 million extension that secures his base salary for a potential 2028 deal, McDaniels is on a five-year, $136 million contract. He is averaging 15 points on 59 percent shooting and 42 percent from three. With increased usage, his production could climb above 20 points per game, a performance level he demonstrated last season when he scored 32 points in Game 6 against Denver.

The schedule provides a manageable runway for recovery. Before Christmas, Minnesota faces only six games against top-tier opponents, including two against the Los Angeles Lakers and one each against the San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets, New York Knicks, and Oklahoma City Thunder. The team will host 16 of their next 26 games, including an eight-game homestand in November, offering a controlled environment for the roster to stabilize.
