Dale Brown, the longtime head basketball coach at Louisiana State University, died Friday, October 23, at the age of 90. His tenure at the university is most closely associated with the recruitment and development of Shaquille O'Neal. Brown served as the only college coach in O'Neal's professional and collegiate career.
The two men first connected in 1984 at a military base in West Germany. O'Neal was 13 years old and standing 6 feet, 9 inches. He approached Brown, who was running a basketball clinic, to ask for game improvement advice. Brown initially mistook the teenager for a soldier and asked about his military service. Upon learning the boy's age, Brown recognized his potential.
Following that initial meeting, Brown began mailing letters and specific basketball exercises to the young player. This correspondence continued as O'Neal developed into a top high school prospect. Brown eventually secured O'Neal's commitment to LSU, where he played from 1989 to 1992. During his time in Baton Rouge, O'Neal was named a two-time consensus All-American and a two-time SEC Player of the Year.
O'Neal was selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 1992 NBA draft. He and Brown maintained a close relationship long after O'Neal left the university. In a 1999 letter published by LSU Athletics, O'Neal described Brown as his only desired college coach. He also characterized Brown as a father figure, leader, and motivator off the court. Brown was present when O'Neal won his first NBA championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2000.
The pair remained in regular contact through letters and emails for decades. ESPN released a documentary titled "Shaq & Dale" in 2015. Directed by Hannah Storm and narrated by Tim McGraw, the film documented their relationship from their first meeting in Germany through O'Neal's NBA career. O'Neal returned to LSU in 2000 to finish his college degree, fulfilling a promise he had made to his family and Brown.
Two days before his death, O'Neal reacted to news that Brown had been selected as the 2027 recipient of the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award. LSU announced the selection on Tuesday, October 21. O'Neal recorded a video message congratulating his former coach and reflecting on his influence. Brown was scheduled to receive the physical award in April 2027.
