The Oklahoma City Thunder face a stark choice. Injuries have thinned their roster to the point where former players are the most logical targets to restore balance. The team entered the current season with a deep bench, but that depth has eroded rapidly. General Manager Sam Presti now must decide whether to trade for a known quantity or rely on the remaining healthy stars.

Three primary obstacles define the current roster situation. First, Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace are dealing with injuries that may end their seasons. Second, Alex Caruso is managing a sprained ankle. Third, Chet Holmgren missed the recent game against the Dallas Mavericks with right knee patellar tendinitis, while Ajay Mitchell was questionable with a right ankle sprain. Only Shai Gilgeous-Alexander from the previous core remains fully available.

League rules complicate the search for specific targets. The NBA prohibits teams from reacquiring players they traded in the previous offseason. This rule eliminates Lu Dort, Aaron Wiggins, and Isaiah Joe from immediate consideration, despite their previous roles with the franchise. A narrow exception exists if a player is traded again and waived, but that scenario is unlikely for these three specific athletes.

Other former All-Stars present complex trade-offs. Russell Westbrook offers high usage but comes with age and defensive consistency concerns. Chris Paul, who played well alongside Gilgeous-Alexander previously, is 41 and has shown limited interest in returning after a stint with the Clippers. Victor Oladipo fits the defensive culture but has not played since the 2022-23 season. Al Horford is available through trade exceptions, though the Thunder already have frontcourt depth.

Ousmane Dieng and Ty Jerome emerge as the most viable candidates for a reacquisition. Dieng was drafted ahead of Jalen Williams in 2022 but struggled to find a role initially. He has thrived with extra playing time for the Milwaukee Bucks and becomes technically eligible for trade after December 15. His availability aligns with the Thunder's current needs at forward.

Ty Jerome is viewed as the most likely target for a significant move. The 29-year-old guard is having a breakout season with the Memphis Grizzlies and is approaching All-Star caliber. However, durability concerns and his expiring contract make him an attractive rental. The decision will hinge on whether the Grizzlies view Jerome as a long-term asset or a player to sell high. The Thunder possess ample draft capital to facilitate such a transaction if the opportunity presents itself.
