Providence basketball gained its most prominent recruit of the 2027 cycle on Wednesday. Five-star center Lewis Uvwo committed to the Friars, bypassing offers from Kentucky, Baylor, and Cal to join a program in the middle of a coaching transition.

The decision lands as a critical early win for Bryan Hodgson. He enters his first season leading the Friars in 2026, and landing Uvwo, who is ranked No. 7 overall by 247Sports, immediately elevates the team's national profile. Uvwo is currently the highest-ranked center in his class and is regarded as the best big man available.

Uvwo plays for Prolific Prep in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He visited all four final schools during his recruitment process. The official visit to Providence occurred last month, following stops in Kentucky, Cal, and Baylor. In an interview with 247Sports, Uvwo cited the program's culture as a primary factor. "I felt like they genuinely believed in me, not just as a basketball player but as a person," he said.

He also praised Hodgson's experience and vision. "Coach Hodgson separated himself through his craft and the fact that he has always been a winner," Uvwo said. He noted that the coach has a clear plan for the program and a specific role for him in it.

The physical profile of Uvwo distinguishes him from typical recruits. He stands 6-foot-10 and weighs 225 pounds, with a wingspan near 7-foot-6. Adam Finklestein, the director of scouting for 247Sports, describes him as an elite defensive prospect. Finklestein notes that Uvwo possesses quick reactions for his size, allowing him to change direction and recover for secondary jumps. The analyst expects Uvwo to add muscle while retaining his current explosiveness.

This commitment places Uvwo in select company at Providence. He is only the third five-star recruit the school has secured in the 247Sports era. The previous two were Ricky Ledo and Kris Dunn, who both arrived in 2012. The Friars are not alone in their recent recruiting success. In a budget tier ranking, Providence sits in Tier 4 with a range of $12.1 million to $15 million. That tier includes Big East rivals Georgetown, Creighton, Villanova, and Marquette, as well as programs like UCLA, Ohio State, Baylor, and Alabama.
