North Carolina hired former Michigan general manager Sean Magee to lead the search for a new permanent general manager. Magee, who operates through his firm TurnkeyZRG, will oversee the process. The interim arrangement follows the suspension of Michael Lombardi on July 27. Lombardi, who was paid $1.5 million annually, was removed from his position due to an HR investigation. He officially resigned in early September.

Bill Belichick has handled the duties of the general manager since Lombardi’s departure. Sources indicate that Belichick will cede this control once the new hire is finalized. A source familiar with the process stated that the new general manager is not expected to be in place before the end of the regular season. Belichick’s contract guarantees at least $20 million in roster spending, a figure that underscores the financial scale of the role.

The Tar Heels currently hold a 4-3 record. The team has improved since the start of the season, though a bowl game is not yet guaranteed. UNC’s 2027 recruiting class holds 16 commitments. The incoming general manager will be responsible for managing the transfer portal, which opens in January, and retaining the current roster. The program aims to move beyond its near .500 record since 2000.

UNC is considering a structural change where the new general manager reports to both athletic director Steve Newmark and head coach Bill Belichick. This differs from Lombardi’s previous role, where he reported solely to Belichick. This dual-reporting model is becoming common in college football as the sport becomes more professionalized. It contrasts with Belichick’s NFL tenure, where he served as the primary football executive for the New England Patriots without the formal general manager title.

The search for a new executive is part of a wider trend in college athletics. Florida, Oklahoma, Stanford, and California have all implemented versions of an empowered general manager. At UNC, football remains the primary economic driver, although men’s basketball under head coach Mike Malone also commands a $20 million roster. The university faces internal politics that previously complicated the hiring of Belichick.

The identity of the new general manager will serve as an indicator of the program’s future direction. Belichick’s contract is no longer guaranteed after the 2027 season. A candidate who does not report directly to Belichick alone may signal a long-term hire beyond the coach’s tenure. Belichick has a history of working with longtime associates, including his sons Steve and Brian, both of whom were on his staff. Steve resigned following the investigation that led to Lombardi’s departure.

North Carolina will play Miami on Saturday. The Tar Heels face one of the highest-powered teams in the nation. The outcome of this game and the subsequent hiring of a general manager will shape the personnel decisions for the upcoming offseason.
