The San Francisco 49ers have secured a reunion with a former franchise cornerstone as they look to reshape their roster for the remainder of the 2026 season. The team acquired defensive tackle DeForest Buckner from the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday.

The trade sends a 2027 fourth-round draft pick to the Colts. This is the first major personnel acquisition for the 6-1 team ahead of the November 10 deadline. The move addresses a clear deficiency in the defensive line, which has struggled to generate pressure this season.

Buckner was originally selected by the 49ers with the seventh overall pick in the 2016 draft. General Manager John Lynch traded him to Indianapolis in March 2020. Lynch described that transaction as the toughest decision of his tenure. The team has since attempted to fill the void with Javon Kinlaw, Javon Hargrave, and Maliek Collins, but none have matched Buckner's impact.

The timing of the trade aligns with internal and external pressure. Buckner expressed frustration with his situation in Indianapolis in an October 18 social media post. Tight end George Kittle and fullback Kyle Juszczyk publicly encouraged the return. Kittle asked Lynch about trading for Khalil Mack and later celebrated the Buckner deal on social media.

Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the staff is actively monitoring the market for additional reinforcements. The team's loss in Atlanta exposed weaknesses in the pass rush and the wide receiver corps. The defensive line recorded zero sacks in that game. Shanahan stated that receiver and defensive line are the two positions where the team is most likely to seek help.

Several current players are returning from injury, but the timeline is uncertain. Wideout Deebo Samuel Sr. has a hamstring injury, and defensive end Nick Bosa is recovering from a calf issue. Defensive tackle C.J. West is undergoing knee surgery, and wideouts Mike Evans and Demarcus Robinson are dealing with Achilles and ankle problems, respectively. Rookie De'Zhaun Stribling is not expected back until December.

The 49ers rank 31st in the NFL in pressure rate when rushing four players, a statistic standing at 23 percent. Adding Buckner, who has missed only 14 games in 10 seasons, provides a reliable starter. However, Shanahan noted the team may need temporary depth to bridge the gap until other players return. The staff is evaluating options like Khalil Mack, Will McDonald IV, Josh Sweat, or Yaya Diaby for the edge rush position.

On the offensive side, potential targets include Brian Thomas Jr., Jerry Jeudy, and Josh Downs. These players are available for less than premium draft capital. For a larger investment, the team could pursue Maxx Crosby or Garrett Wilson, though those deals would require multiple first-round picks. The front office has previously made such high-cost trades for Trent Williams and Christian McCaffrey.

Trent Williams, 38, expressed his support for aggressive moves. He noted that veterans value proven talent over draft potential. Williams said the team should not hesitate to trade top picks if the right opportunity arises. He described the current window as a chance to break through, stating that the players are ready to "go for broke."
