Tesla voids 2M Australian and New Zealand Cybertruck orders after 7-year wait
The company will refund deposits within 30 days after deciding not to build a right-hand-drive version of the electric pickup.

Tesla has terminated Cybertruck orders for customers in Australia and New Zealand.
The decision ends a seven-year wait for buyers who paid deposits starting in November 2019. Emails sent on 23 October confirm that reservations are now void.
Tesla states that full refunds will be processed within 30 days. Customers who switch to a new Model 3 or Model Y will receive a free one-year subscription to Full Self-Driving. This offer targets buyers of right-hand-drive vehicles that Tesla already manufactures.
The cancellation follows a quiet shift in strategy. Tesla removed the Australian reservation page in May 2022, leaving only a button for updates. In 2024, the company shipped one truck for a display tour. Elon Musk told shareholders that year that certification for other markets might happen the following year. No right-hand-drive model arrived.
The primary obstacle is vehicle design. The Cybertruck is built exclusively in left-hand drive. Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and Japan require right-hand drive. Certification under Australian design rules would add cost to a vehicle facing weak demand in North America.
Sales data supports the decision to pause international expansion. Tesla delivered 8,295 units of its "Other Models" category in the third quarter of 2026. This category now consists almost entirely of Cybertrucks. Estimates place quarterly sales at 7,000 to 8,000 units. The production line is built for 250,000 units annually.
Tesla has delivered Cybertrucks only to left-hand-drive markets, including South Korea, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, and Israel. The truck remains unavailable in the EU due to pedestrian safety concerns. Australia and New Zealand have a combined population of 33 million people.
