Ukraine's satellite links hit top speed again
Kyiv officials confirmed that critical communications networks have returned to full capacity, resolving a recent bottleneck that hampered military operations.

Ukrainian satellite communications have returned to full operational speed as of this morning, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The restoration of the Starlink and Starshield networks marks the end of a disruptive period that had limited the country's military capabilities. Zelenskyy addressed the nation in a video message to confirm that the systems are once again performing at their pre-restriction levels.
The president stated that speeds began recovering during the night and reached the necessary thresholds for military use by early morning. He emphasized that the network now provides the bandwidth required for critical operations. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to all individuals who assisted in restoring these vital communication channels.
Military data collected prior to the official announcement corroborated the recovery. Defense forces and experts from the Ministry of Defence initially recorded speeds exceeding 161 km/h. Subsequent official confirmation from the ministry indicated that speeds had climbed above 400 km/h. Officials also reported that the connection had become stable, signaling a return to normal operations.
The resolution of this issue is significant for frontline logistics. Zelenskyy noted that the previous speed limits interfered with supply chains and restricted the use of drones. He specifically highlighted the impact on the ability to defend against jet-powered Shahed drones. The full restoration of bandwidth allows for more efficient coordination and protection along the line of contact.
The disruption had been a source of friction in recent weeks. A few days ago, Zelenskyy reported that equipment was capped at speeds between 130 and 161 km/h in several sectors. This limitation forced a reduction in operational tempo. The recent lift of these restrictions removes a key constraint on the military's technological advantage.
The political dimensions of the bandwidth restrictions have also come under scrutiny. US President Donald Trump stated on October 16 that the White House had not been involved in limiting Ukraine's use of the system. This claim emerged as the restrictions drew attention from both military and political observers.
Separate reporting adds context to the decision-making process. The Telegraph reported that SpaceX CEO Elon Musk proposed restricting the bandwidth of the satellite networks used by the Ukrainian military. This suggests that the technical limits were a deliberate measure rather than a technical failure, further explaining the recent rapid restoration.
