University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences professor Timothy Langford, M.D., received a top honor from his undergraduate alma mater. He was one of three alumni recognized by the Arkansas State University Alumni Association on October 24.

The award ceremony took place during halftime at a homecoming football game in Jonesboro. The Red Wolves played Georgia State on that afternoon. The A-State Alumni Association presented Langford with its Distinguished Alumni Award.

This citation is the highest honor the association bestows. Alumni Association President Natalie Rogers explained that the award recognizes graduates whose work brings honor to the university. She noted that Langford and the other two honorees have made lasting impacts in their professions and communities.

The association’s board of directors selected the recipients. They chose the trio from nominations submitted by fellow alumni and supporters. The other two honorees were Phillip Poston of Jonesboro and Billy Don Tiner of San Antonio.

Langford graduated from Arkansas State in 1984. He played quarterback for the Red Wolves from 1980 to 1983. He was an All-Southland Conference player during those years. He is inducted into the athletic department’s Hall of Honor and the football program’s Ring of Honor.

While a senior, Langford received the university’s first-ever Terry Gwin Award. That prize goes to the top student athlete in any sport. He and his wife, Terri, have supported the university’s athletic program for years. In 2004, they made a major gift that established the Tim and Terri Langford Sports Medicine Center.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in zoology and pre-medicine at Arkansas State, Langford attended UAMS. He earned his medical degree in 1988. He completed his urology residency at the same institution. He practiced for 28 years at Arkansas Urology.

Langford served as president and medical director of the state’s largest urology practice. He returned to UAMS in 2021. In November 2025, he was invested in the Steven K. Wilson Endowed Chair in Prosthetic Urology. He currently serves as chair of the UAMS Department of Urology.

His service to Arkansas State extends beyond his time as a student. He was appointed to the university’s Board of Trustees in 2014. He was reappointed in 2019. Following his term, he was named trustee emeritus. The association noted that he helped guide the university through a period of growth.

Langford practices general urology with a focus on prostate cancer and robotic surgery. He also treats benign prostatic hyperplasia and male voiding dysfunction. He said his education at Arkansas State gave him the foundation for his career. He expressed gratitude for the relationships and experiences that prepared him for his current role.

The association also recognized Phillip Poston, a 1996 graduate with a degree in marketing. Poston is a businessman known for his work in economic development and workforce advancement. He serves on numerous boards and organizations.

Billy Don Tiner, a 1972 graduate, was the third honoree. He is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a retired U.S. Navy captain. He also earned an undergraduate degree in zoology. He is recognized for his military service, medical career, and philanthropy.
