The Suncoast Sand Witches are entering their fourth season of performing in Southwest Florida. The group consists of 26 women and one man from Sarasota, Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, and Nokomis.
The troupe began life as a local copy of a German viral video from four and a half years ago. That original footage featured the Wolfshäger Hexenbrut dancing with brooms to Peter Fox's song "Schüttel deinen Speck." The clip inspired hundreds of women across the United States to adopt pointed hats and broomsticks for Halloween.
The local group quickly grew beyond that single German routine. In their second year, members added the zombie shuffle from Michael Jackson's "Thriller." Suncoast View reporter observed the choreography during a recent practice session. The group now performs four separate dances, adding one new piece to its lineup each year.
Members of the coven work in various fields. They gather to practice their moves throughout the month. The troupe plans to appear at local events and beach gatherings for the remainder of October.
Residents can find specific performance dates on the group's official Facebook page. The troupe continues its tradition of entertaining crowds in full witch regalia.
