Residents of Austin can attend three days of free live music during the January 2027 edition of Free Week. The event runs from January 7 to January 9. This expansion adds one more day to the existing two-day format.

The festival previously operated over two days. In 2026, the event featured more than 80 musical acts across 14 venues. All locations are situated in the Red River Cultural District. The Red River Cultural District is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and developing that specific neighborhood.

Free Week functions as a donation-based event. Musicians receive paid gigs while attendees hop between venues without purchasing tickets. The format encourages spending on food and beverages at local businesses. This activity supports staff tips during slower business seasons. A similar summer event called Hot Summer Nights follows the same model.

Nicole Klepadlo, the executive director of the Red River Cultural District, stated that the festival aims to prioritize the local music community. She noted that the expansion allows the city to experience local talent for three consecutive days. She added that the goal is to create meaningful opportunities for artists and venues.

Musicians can currently apply for slots through a free online process. The organization accepts bands, solo artists, and DJs. Applicants who have not performed at a Red River Cultural District event in the last two years receive specific encouragement to submit applications. Accepted performers will receive notification at least 30 days before the festival begins.

Attendees who plan to visit should arrive early for popular sets. The festival relies on donations and local business spending to support the community. The next scheduled dates for this expanded version are January 7, 8, and 9, 2027.
