Six Flags will install seatbelts on the Goliath rollercoaster at its Georgia park. The change follows the death of a rider who was ejected from the attraction earlier this month.
Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, 42, fell from the coaster after its lap bar failed. The ride features a 165-foot drop and a second plunge of 180 feet. Kariem struck other cars during his fall.
The company temporarily closed Goliath and eight other rides across five parks. Georgia authorities are investigating the fatal incident. Six Flags has also retained an independent firm to review safety procedures for all attractions.
CEO John Reilly stated that the company will fit seatbelts on other coasters using similar restraint systems. He did not name specific rides. Goliath currently uses a lap bar design produced by Bolliger & Mabillard.
Reilly acknowledged the impact of the accident in a message on Friday. He noted that trust is earned through actions rather than words. The company will continue to communicate its progress to guests.
The incident occurs while Six Flags faces a lawsuit over its X2 ride at Magic Mountain. Former riders claim the coaster caused brain injuries and deaths. The company permanently closed X2 in September.
