Thirty-four individuals were left wounded when armed assailants opened fire on a funeral gathering in southern Jordan on Friday. At least seven people lost their lives in the incident, which authorities are calling a rare and brutal targeting of Christian worshipers in the majority Sunni Muslim kingdom. The violence unfolded in the village of Hammoud, located within the Karak governorate.
Mazen Al-Faraya, the interior minister, addressed the press to confirm the casualty count and identify the attackers as a group of extremists. He stated that the perpetrators had stormed the compound of a Greek Orthodox church before beginning the shooting. The public security directorate provided further details, noting that the gunmen exited a vehicle during the funeral procession to engage the crowd. A manhunt for the suspects is currently active across the area.
State broadcaster Al-Mamlaka aired video footage that captured the precise moment the attack began. The clip shows two men dressed in casual attire wielding pistols, while a third individual carries a long gun. They fire from a street-level entrance and then push further into the church grounds. An eyewitness who spoke to the station described the attackers arriving in a vehicle and firing continuously for five minutes before fleeing the scene.
The witness estimated that between 150 and 200 people were present inside and around the church at the time of the shooting. According to the account, the majority of the victims were older adults, with ages ranging from 50 to 70. The location is significant, as Karak sits 110 miles south of the capital, Amman, and is home to a substantial Christian population.
King Abdullah II reacted swiftly to the news, promising severe consequences for those behind the violence. In a post on social media, he declared that every Jordanian life is valuable and that the nation would strike with an iron fist against those who threaten its security. Mohammed Al-Momani, the minister of government communications, added that security forces are actively investigating the incident to determine the full scope of the attack.
International leaders also weighed in on the tragedy. Joseph Aoun, the Lebanese president and the sole Christian head of state in the Arab world, labeled the event a heinous terrorist attack. A statement from his presidency emphasized that terrorism has no specific religion or homeland, aiming instead to disrupt coexistence and sow division among communities.
The region of Karak has a history of deadly violence. In 2016, gunmen ambushed police forces in a series of coordinated attacks in the area. These strikes included an assault on a Crusader castle that was popular with tourists. That incident resulted in ten deaths, seven of whom were officers, along with dozens of injuries. Security forces eventually neutralized the attackers after a prolonged standoff.
The current event marks another significant challenge for regional stability. The timing of the attack during a funeral has drawn particular attention to the safety of religious gatherings. As the investigation continues, authorities remain focused on locating the suspects and ensuring the protection of the local community.
