Real Madrid visited Camp Nou on Sunday evening to take on Barcelona, a match that determined who would hold the head-to-head advantage in Spanish football's most famous rivalry.

Kylian Mbappe scored two goals for Real Madrid, securing a 2-1 victory over Barcelona. The win stopped Barcelona's nine-game winning streak in La Liga. Real Madrid had not beaten Barcelona in the league before this match. Had Barcelona won, they would have broken the record for the best start in Spanish top-flight history, a mark set by Real Madrid in the 1968-69 season.

This was Barcelona's second consecutive defeat. They lost to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League just days earlier. The result also shifted the all-time El Clasico record. Real Madrid now holds 107 wins against 106 for Barcelona.

Mbappe's two goals brought his total to 100 for Real Madrid across all competitions. He joined the club from PSG in 2024. He is currently the second-highest scorer in La Liga this season. The milestone came one day before the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London, where he is considered a leading candidate for the award.

Real Madrid's form has improved since early losses to Real Betis and Atletico Madrid. They have now won five consecutive matches. Three of those wins were in La Liga, and two were in the Champions League. After ten matches, Real Madrid sits in third place with 24 points. Barcelona leads the table with 27 points, while Atletico Madrid is in second with 25.

Jose Mourinho returned to Real Madrid after two seasons without trophies. His first major test was this Clasico. He celebrated the win with a knee slide. He told reporters that the team is playing to win the championship, not just individual matches. His last league title win was with Chelsea in 2014-15.

The victory ended a nine-game winning run for Barcelona and gave Real Madrid a 1-0 lead in the all-time El Clasico record. Mbappe reached 100 goals for the club, and Real Madrid closed the gap to the leader to three points.
