Bayern Munich holds a one-point advantage over Freiburg in the Bundesliga standings heading into Sunday’s match, a margin that leaves little room for error with the head coach sidelined. The club announced on Saturday that Vincent Kompany will miss the game against Freiburg after collapsing on the training pitch the previous day.
Director of Sport Max Eberl stated that Kompany is in a stable condition and undergoing examinations to determine the specific nature of his viral illness. He noted that no fixed recovery period has been established, emphasizing that the absence will be measured in weeks rather than days. Eberl explained that the club requires a clear diagnosis before setting realistic expectations for the 40-year-old’s return to duty.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks will take charge of the squad for the fixture. Danks, who led the Saturday press conference in Kompany’s absence, reported a brief phone conversation with the former Belgium captain on Friday. He described the call as a check-in on Kompany’s health, explicitly stating that they avoided discussing tactical matters to ensure the coach could rest.
Danks affirmed that the coaching staff manages all football operations as a unit. He stated, "All the football operations are in our hands, and we'll work together as a team to keep the club moving forward." The club postponed a second-team match on Friday following the incident but decided not to seek a delay for the Bundesliga fixture.
Eberl argued that a strong performance and a positive result would serve as the best aid for Kompany’s recovery. He viewed the upcoming match as an opportunity for the team to demonstrate stability during this period of uncertainty. This approach aligns with the club's strategy to maintain momentum despite the leadership vacuum at the top.
The squad will also be without Germany national team captain Joshua Kimmich, who has been on bereavement leave since Tuesday. Danks confirmed that Kimmich will not be available for the trip to Freiburg. This absence further narrows the options for Danks as he prepares the team for the contest against the league’s second-place finishers.
Kompany had returned to the dugout for Wednesday’s home match against Arsenal despite the illness. He acknowledged afterward that he had ignored early warning signs, noting that his body eventually forced him to stop. The next major competitive fixture for Bayern is a Champions League match against Atletico Madrid in Madrid on November 3.
