Arsenal and Manchester City share the top of the Premier League table with 21 points each after eight matchdays. The tie resulted from split results on Saturday, as City suffered their first loss of the season while Arsenal secured a win at home.
Aston Villa defeated Manchester City 2-1 at Villa Park, ending the visitors' unbeaten start to the campaign. Nicolas Jackson scored twice for the home side. The first goal arrived in the sixth minute after Marc Guehi made a heavy touch that allowed captain John McGinn to steal the ball and set up Jackson. Erling Haaland equalized for City shortly after halftime by heading in a free kick delivered by Iliman Ndiaye. Jackson restored Villa's lead on the hour mark, finishing after a cutback from Ibrahim Mbaye. His shot went under goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The result lifted Villa to sixth place with 11 points. It marked their first home league win of the season and their third consecutive league victory over Manchester City. Manager Unai Emery's side now sits three points behind the leaders. Jackson told TNT Sports that the club is working game by game, noting that the current situation is just the beginning.
Manchester City are currently awaiting the outcome of an appeal regarding an independent commission's finding that the club committed 114 breaches of Premier League financial rules. The club has denied any wrongdoing. This off-field issue adds pressure to their on-field performance as they look to recover from the Villa Park setback.
Arsenal capitalized on City's loss by beating Everton 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium in heavy rain. Ezri Konsa scored in the seventh minute after a corner by Martin Odegaard caused confusion in the Everton box. The ball was not cleared after a near-post flick, and Konsa bundled it in from close range. This was Konsa's first goal for the club and Arsenal's first set-piece goal in 13 games. Ben White and Gabriel combined for the second goal in the 68th minute, with White crossing to the far post for Gabriel to head home on his 200th Premier League appearance.
Arsenal now sits level with Manchester City at 21 points. Everton remains ninth in the standings. The result ends a three-point gap that previously separated the two top teams. Arsenal's win at home was their second of the matchday, joining Tottenham Hotspur, who also secured a victory away from home.
Tottenham Hotspur beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, marking only their second league win there in 36 years. Mike Penders, making his first league start for Chelsea, punched a corner into his own net in the 77th minute. Cole Palmer received a second yellow card in the 80th minute. Mathys Tel sealed the win in the 87th minute with a low finish into the bottom corner. Spurs now sit in 12th place with a win that they described as very special due to their previous struggles at that venue.
