An eleven-year-old girl faces a felony charge in Miami-Dade County following a violent confrontation in a school cafeteria. Miami-Dade School Police determined that the student attacked another child of the same age at Nautilus Middle School in Miami Beach. The incident, captured on a cell phone, led to a virtual court appearance where the minor was formally charged.
The fight took place on September 24. Police records indicate the victim was seated in the cafeteria when the accused approached her. The assailant grabbed the victim by the hair and pulled her to the floor. She then struck the victim multiple times with her fists and kicked her in the stomach. School staff intervened after approximately 25 seconds to stop the assault.
Santos, the mother of the victim, described the emotional toll of reviewing the blurred footage. “This is my girl, and this is the image that lives in my head,” she said. Santos noted that the video shows repeated blows to her daughter’s head. “The suffering I have had… No one knows what it is to look at that video of so many blows to your daughter’s head and want to be in her place,” she stated.
Santos said her daughter is currently on medical leave and has not returned to school. Photos shared by the mother show bruises and lacerations. “On the day of the incident they opened up her little head, her hair, and she had bruises and lacerations,” Santos recalled. The injuries required medical attention, and the family documented the physical damage to the child.
The accused appeared virtually before a judge at the Miami-Dade Children’s Court. The judge assigned a charge of aggravated assault, classified as a second-degree felony. A restraining order was issued, requiring the accused to stay away from the victim. “It is an aggravated assault… a second-degree felony,” the court stated during the hearing.
The mother of the accused, who spoke before the hearing while keeping her identity private, defended her daughter’s actions. “Unfortunately, yes, there was an incident, but my girl is an 11-year-old girl,” she said. The mother claimed her daughter had been bullied for several weeks prior to the fight. “There was not a day that my girl did not come to my house crying about all the things they had done to her there at school,” the mother asserted.
The mother of the accused stated she sought help from school authorities before the altercation. She claimed the staff did not respond to her emails or phone calls. “They never basically responded to the cries for help that I was asking them for by email, calls, nothing,” she said. The accused no longer attends Nautilus Middle School. The trial is scheduled for December 21.
The Miami-Dade Public Schools district issued a statement regarding the incident. Officials said school staff had met with the students before the fight to help calm the conflict. The district stated that staff responded immediately when the altercation occurred. The case was handled according to the Student Code of Conduct and referred to law enforcement.
