Webb County recorded nearly 14,000 early ballots by October 22 as the Laredo mayoral race entered a critical phase. Five candidates currently compete for the top position. The field includes the incumbent mayor, a sitting council member, a former council member, a businessman, and a new entrant.
Incumbent Dr. Victor Trevino prioritized public health, focusing specifically on youth medical access. He stated, "We need to ensure that our youth are taken care of. Have the ability to have medical services." Trevino argued that healthy pediatric and adolescent populations will define the city's future.
Councilwoman Alyssa Cigarroa proposed a strategy centered on council unity. Her plan involves assessing the specific needs of every district to establish a shared vision. She noted, "So that way we, work backwards from there."
Businessman J.D. Gonzalez focused on economic growth and infrastructure. He intends to review the city's water system master plan and address existing pressure and flow issues. Gonzalez also pledged to expedite the permitting process to maintain community momentum.
Former council member Alfonso Casso identified water as his primary concern. He advocated for saving the river and securing alternative sources. In the short term, he suggested drilling on public school land to generate revenue for students. His long-term proposal is a "Gulf water triangle."
Jorge Garza, the fifth candidate, did not respond to requests for comment regarding his first 100-day priorities.
