Major League Baseball concluded the 2026 postseason in Tampa on Wednesday evening, when the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 at Tropicana Field. The result ended the Rays' season and granted the Brewers their first World Series championship in franchise history after a five-game series. This loss followed a 12-inning walk-off victory for Tampa on Tuesday.
The conclusion of the World Series shifts local attention to the ongoing development of a new stadium on the Dale Mabry campus. The Tampa City Council is scheduled to hold a special vote on a critical component of the Rays' proposed deal. This vote concerns the Binding Community Benefits agreement, which mandates that the team provide $60 million in funding to the city and county over a 35-year period. The agreement allocates $21 million to the City of Tampa and $39 million to Hillsborough County. The Rays may satisfy this requirement through various programs, services, and initiatives that earn credit toward the total commitment.
Construction for the new stadium is projected to finish in late 2030, though officials acknowledge that timelines may slip. The project necessitates the demolition of most buildings on the Dale Mabry campus. Hillsborough College students have expressed concern regarding the plan to divide the campus into three temporary locations during the build. President Ken Atwater informed students that shuttles would be required for travel between buildings due to anticipated parking shortages.
Elsewhere in the region, Manatee County Commissioners approved the next phase of improvements for the Bishop Animal Shelter. Advocates had previously noted that the facility lacks covered walkways connecting its buildings. The Construction Services division presented a final proposal for permanent shade structures with an estimated budget of approximately $34 million. Commissioners moved to evaluate the plan and build a budget for the project.
The Tampa City Council will proceed with the special vote on the stadium funding requirements. Hillsborough College will continue to manage student transportation between the three temporary campus locations. Manatee County will move forward with budgeting for the animal shelter shade structures. Construction on the new Rays stadium is expected to begin following the approval of the final deal terms.
