A 36-year-old British woman died on Tuesday in the Bahamas after a strong current swept her away during a family snorkeling trip. The Royal Bahamas Police Force is investigating the incident, which occurred near the southern point of North Bimini. The woman was with her husband and their two sons when the water conditions changed.

Police stated that the current initially carried both boys away. While the woman attempted to reach them, she was also pulled from their side. The two children were eventually rescued from the water. The woman was later pulled from the sea and brought to the North Bimini ferry dock.

Officers at the local Alice Town police station received a report shortly after 10 a.m. that a woman was unresponsive at the ferry dock. By the time responders arrived at the scene, the woman had already been transported to the local clinic. A doctor pronounced her dead despite efforts to revive her. CPR had been administered at the ferry dock prior to her transport.

The police force posted a preliminary account of the events on social media. The statement confirmed that foul play is not suspected at this time. Authorities have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. The investigation remains active as officials gather more details from the scene.

The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has confirmed it is aware of the case. A spokesperson stated that officials are in contact with local authorities and are providing support to the family. The office noted that its thoughts are with the family of the British woman who has died in the Bahamas.

North Bimini is part of a small island group located between Andros and Miami. It serves as the closest point in the Bahamas to the United States mainland. The islands are known for their connection to Ernest Hemingway and for hosting a shark research center.

The next step in the process involves the completion of the autopsy. This procedure will provide the medical evidence needed to finalize the cause of death. Police will use the results to close their preliminary review.
