A 36-year-old British woman died on Tuesday after a strong current separated her from her two sons during a snorkeling trip in Bimini, the Bahamas.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force opened a sudden death investigation into the incident near the southern point of the island. Officers stated the woman was from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire. She was in the water with her husband and sons when the current pulled the boys away. The mother attempted to reach them and was also swept from the group.
The boys were recovered from the water unharmed. The woman was later pulled from the sea and transported to the North Bimini Ferry Dock. Witnesses reported that CPR was administered at the dock before she was moved to a local clinic.
A doctor at the clinic pronounced her dead shortly after 10 a.m. despite resuscitation efforts. The police force confirmed that officers at the Alice Town station were notified of an unresponsive woman at the ferry dock. They arrived to find she had already been transported for medical care.
Authorities do not suspect foul play at this time. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. A Foreign Office spokesperson said officials are in contact with local authorities and supporting the family.
The investigation remains active as the force reviews the timeline of events from the initial separation to the final medical response.
