Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado spent 11 months in exile before arriving at a church in Lara State on Sunday. She made her first public appearance in the country since December, greeting a crowd of supporters who applauded and embraced her upon her arrival.
Machado announced her presence on social media, writing, “I am here. With you.” Fellow opposition figure Edmundo González Urrutia confirmed the return. He described the event as a pivotal step for the nation’s democratic future and stated his intention to rejoin her in Venezuela shortly.
The opposition leader entered the country after a brief detention during anti-government demonstrations forced her into hiding. During her time abroad, she campaigned for a democratic transition and accepted the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo. Previous attempts to return were blocked by logistical hurdles, including denied landing permissions in neighboring Caribbean territories.
The political environment in Caracas changed during Machado’s absence. U.S. military forces ousted former President Nicolás Maduro in January and transported him to New York to face federal drug charges. Delcy Rodríguez, a longtime ruling party official, assumed the role of interim president with Washington’s backing.
Criticism of the interim administration has increased as it exceeded its original timeframe without setting a concrete date for national presidential elections. Machado’s coalition continues to pressure the government for a firm electoral timeline. The opposition demands a swift return to the polls, safe passage for political exiles, and the release of political prisoners.
U.S. diplomats have prioritized economic stabilization measures before voting. President Donald Trump addressed reporters on Sunday regarding Machado’s return. He noted he was unfamiliar with the specific details of her arrival but expressed warm sentiments toward her and voiced hope for her safety.
