Independent MP Helen Haines moved to a serious but stable condition at The Alfred hospital in Melbourne on Saturday morning. The update came from a hospital spokesperson, who confirmed the change from a previous critical but stable status. Haines lost both legs after being struck by a car in Wangaratta on Monday afternoon. Surgeons initially attempted to save her right leg, but the severity of the injuries required double amputation.

Phil Haines, the MP's husband, addressed reporters outside the hospital on Wednesday. He stated that his wife's heart and mind are in good shape. Phil Haines described her as having a huge heart and the sharpest intellect. He noted that these traits are the most important aspects of his wife for their family.

Police charged Brendan Nugent, a 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee, on Tuesday. The charges include dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a commonwealth public official. Court documents reveal two additional charges for cultivating and possessing cannabis. Nugent appeared at Wangaratta magistrates court on Wednesday and did not apply for bail.

Staff for Haines announced on Friday that they aim to reopen her electorate offices next Thursday. The team noted that many members witnessed the incident and were among the first to provide aid. They asked for understanding as they care for one another during the recovery period. The office team expressed gratitude for the support shown by the Indi community and the wider public.

More than $730,000 has been raised for Save the Children in Haines's honour. Phil Haines encouraged the public to donate to the charity's special appeal while his wife recovers. The funds will support the organization's work in her name.

The incident in north-east Victoria has prompted discussions on the security risks for federal members. In Western Australia, police charged a 56-year-old man after he allegedly threatened staff at the office of state minister Hannah Beazley. This occurred days after the attack on Haines. A community vigil was held in Wodonga on Wednesday evening to support the MP.

Cathy McGowan, Haines's predecessor in the Indi seat, spoke at the Wodonga vigil. She said the community was dealing with mixed emotions following the news of the double amputation. The event served as a gathering point for supporters in the region.
