Apple Unveils Lighter MacBook Pro With Existing Chips Next Week
The company skips new M6 silicon for the October 28 launch, betting on a thinner design and OLED touch display to drive sales.

Apple plans to debut a fully redesigned MacBook Pro on October 28 at an event titled "Pro and tell." The company expects the new laptop to arrive with the same M5 Pro and M5 Max processors introduced nearly eight months ago. No new M6 chips will appear in this generation.
The redesign focuses on hardware changes rather than speed. Reports describe a new industrial design that is lighter and slightly thinner than current models. The device will feature an OLED display that supports touch input. Apple will replace the current notch with a Dynamic Island cutout. Some reports also suggest a C2 cellular modem may be included, though that detail is less certain.
Mark Gurman, who provided the initial reporting, noted that the laptop will rely on existing silicon. The M5 Pro and M5 Max chips first appeared in late 2025. For users prioritizing raw processing power, the new machine offers no performance increase over the models currently on sale.
Apple is skipping the M6 Pro and M6 Max processors entirely. The company is fast-tracking M7 Pro and M7 Max chips for a 2027 release. This creates a gap in the product lineup where the redesigned MacBook Pro will sit without new underlying technology.
Pricing remains uncertain but may rise. The current MacBook Pro line is already expensive. 9to5Mac suggests the redesign could carry a premium, potentially pushing the starting price to approximately $2,999. This would mean customers pay more for a machine that is no faster than its predecessor. The outlet noted that replacing current models at the same price point is unlikely given the ongoing memory crisis.
Apple faces a marketing challenge with professional users who delayed purchases earlier this year. The company will need to convince buyers that the design improvements justify the cost without a speed boost. The design changes include the new OLED touch screen and lighter body.
The October 28 event will confirm the details of the new hardware. Apple has not yet released official specifications or pricing. The launch marks the next step in the MacBook Pro line, focusing on form factor and display technology before new silicon arrives in 2027.
